Event Waste Management and Bin Hire
Are you hosting a community event on Council land?
Council hires waste and recycling bins for community events and can assist you to effectively minimise waste sent to landfill and maximise recycling.
To hire bins for an event, your Event Organiser will need to complete and submit an Event Waste and Recycling form 10 business days prior to the event.
Your event must align with Council’s Single Use Plastics Policy.

How many bins will you need?
Generally, you can estimate a minimum of one litre of waste and one litre of recycling per person per meal. However, this is a guide only and the nature of the event, type of catering facilities, the supply of alcohol and the crowd profile can increase how much waste is generated. For example, at events such as food and wine festivals, the amount of waste generated per person is often higher.
For example, at a large event with around 1,000 people the approximate waste generation may be:
- 1,000 people x 1 meal = 1,000 litres of estimated waste and 1,000 litres of recycling
- Waste Bins required: Divide 1,000 by 240 (a standard wheelie bin is 240 litres) = 4 bins
- Recycling Bins required: Divide 1,000 by 240 (a standard wheelie bin is 240 litres) = 4 bins
- You may need 4 waste bins and 4 recycling bins.
Your waste and recycling requirements, including bin type and numbers of bins will need to assessed by Council’ Waste Management Team prior to your event.
