Installation of Domestic Solid Fuel Heating Appliances

All new domestic solid fuel heating appliances require approval prior to their installation under Section 68 of the Local Government Act, 1993 to ensure that the installation and operation complies with the applicable guidelines, Australian Standards and impacts on nearby premises have been considered.

Hornsby Certifiers will assess applications for approval to install a domestic solid fuel heating appliance on a case-by-case basis to ensure that the relevant Australian Standards, NCC (Building Code of Australia) requirement and any impacts on nearby premises have been considered including:

  • The proposed heating appliance must comply with AS 4012.2014 and AS 4013.2014
  • The proposed installation of the heating appliance must meet the requirements of Part 12.4 of the NCC (Building Code of Australia) 2022
  • The proposed installation of the heating appliance must meet the requirements of AS/NZS 2918.2018
  • The topography of the site or likely weather patterns or configuration of nearby dwelling/s must not indicate a potential to cause a smoke nuisance
  • Significant trees or other environmental or structural factors in the immediate vicinity must not cause a smoke down draught

Documents and plans to be supplied with your Domestic Solid Fuel Heating Appliance Application

  • Owners consent form
  • Architectural Plans drawn to scale including:
    • A site plan showing the location of the proposed appliance, flue and chimney and any adjoining buildings within a 15 metre radius
    • A full set of elevations showing the height of the proposed flue and chimney above the roof in compliance with Part 12.4 of the NCC (Building Code of Australia) 2022 and Australian Standard 2918-2018 - Domestic Solid Fuel Burning Appliances – Installation and any adjoining buildings within a 15 metre horizontal radius
    • A floor plan showing the location of the proposed appliance, hearth and any safety clearances or heat shield to be provided
    • A section plan showing how the proposed appliance will be installed, including the construction of the hearth, any safety clearances or heat shield to be provided and the construction of the flue and chimney.
  • Manufacturers specifications of the brand and model of the proposed appliance including the flue and chimney
  • A certificate of compliance from the manufacturer of the proposed appliance stating that it complies with:
    • Australian Standard 4012-2014 Domestic solid fuel burning appliances – Method for determination of power output and efficiency
    • Australian Standard 4013-2014 Domestic solid fuel burning appliances – Method for determination of flue gas emission.
