Heritage item review

The Heritage Item Review is a review of 184 nominated potential heritage items for their inclusion in the heritage schedule, 15 existing items for their exclusion from the heritage schedule and 62 previously classified regional items to determine if they meet the threshold of State heritage listing.

The Heritage Item Review is intended to provide clear recommendations and associated inventory sheets to assist Council with refining schedule 5 of the Hornsby LEP 2013 by protecting and managing the heritage resources of the Shire into the future.

A Heritage Item Review is a heritage assessment undertaken of nominated building, structure, landscape, or site conducted by an independent professional heritage consultant in line with the NSW heritage significance criteria. It is an opportunity to consider additional places of value for inclusion on the heritage schedule and revaluation of existing items for an increased significance level or exclusion if the heritage values have diminished.

The objectives of the Heritage Item Review project is:

  • To strengthen Councils current heritage list, management and protection of properties/places not previously identified.
  • To review potential new heritage items and provide recommendations for inclusion or exclusion from Schedule 5 of the HLEP.
  • To review items for potential removal from listing.
  • To determine whether particular items meet the thresholds for listing on the State Heritage Register.
  • To prepare heritage inventory sheets for identified properties that are recommended for heritage listing.
  • To present data and information in a contemporary and usable format.
  • To inform the heritage content of Council’s subsequent Planning Proposal to implement the Schedule 5 changes recommended.

Yes – the Heritage Item Review will identify which of the nominated items should be proceeded by Council as potential items for listing.

The Heritage Item Review has been led by Artefact Heritage Services. The project team comprised of the Managing Director, a Principal with over 25 years of professional experience in the heritage field working in both Government and private industry, a qualified heritage architect and two built heritage specialists specialising in cultural heritage management.

The draft study was completed in June 2023. Refinement of the draft study’s recommendations is currently underway to prepare the information for community input and consultation.
