Volunteering at the Library
Hornsby Shire Libraries have a few roles for volunteers across the service. Each position is outlined below.
If you are a current Justice of the Peace and would like to volunteer at Hornsby or Pennant Hills Library, we encourage you to apply. Our JPs are asked to commit to a minimum of 2 hours per month, at a mutually convenient time.
Computer assistance volunteers assist the public with basic technology support for smartphones, tablets and laptops. Sessions last for one hour. Volunteers may assist with:
- Creating and using an email
- Creating documents
- Attaching files and photos
- Using subscription library resources
- Downloading and streaming content like movies, books, audiobooks and magazines
- Using a device
- Searching the Internet
Hornsby Library accepts a limited number of Duke of Edinburgh students who need to complete the ‘Voluntary Services’ section of the program. Students are required to live or go to school in the local area.
Duke of Edinburgh students assist the Library with shelving and would be required to commit to one hour per week, on a weekday afternoon between 3pm and 5pm.
Some points for those seeking to be a Library Volunteer:
- Volunteers, of their own free will, are those seeking to benefit the community. They do not seek monetary award or reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses in providing their service. Volunteering doesn’t include those seeking formal work experience or those required to perform community work. Volunteering should not be seen as a preliminary step to gaining employment with Hornsby Shire Council.
- All applications will be evaluated on the skill or tasks that can be performed. You will be contacted for a phone interview, we may also conduct a referee check and an assessment of your suitability for the role will be completed.
- Volunteers will undergo an induction to the policies and procedures for volunteering with Hornsby Shire Council. As part of this process, volunteers agree to adhere to the policies and procedures outlined in the Induction.
- Volunteers must follow Hornsby Shire council’s code of conduct, the library’s code of conduct, council’s customer services and presentation guidelines and adhere to councils WH&S guidelines. Failure to comply with these conditions, may result in a termination of the agreement.
