East Asquith Trail Links
This project involves construction of multiple walking track links surrounding Mills Park in Asquith.
Background
As per Councils Walking and Cycling Strategy and Employment Lands Study, Council is proposing to formalise walking track links surrounding Mills Park in Asquith. Currently, there are several fire trails and informal walking tracks in this area. Council is proposing to formalise some existing tracks in combination with new walking tracks which will create new bush walking opportunities, circuit walks and better links to recreational areas for the community.
Consultation
Council consulted with residents and adjacent landowners between August 2021 to June 2022. Residents to the north were consulted regarding the proposal between Queens Road and Mills Park to Chelmsford Road. Residents to the south were consulted regarding the proposal between Stokes Avenue and Michigan Avenue.
Unfortunately, all surrounding landowners were not able to collaborate on the proposal at this time, as a result Council has been working on alternatives to undertake this proposal on Council managed land only.
Council received several submissions from residents in favour of a track connection between Mills Park and Stokes Avenue. Due to the generally inaccessible terrain including cliffs this was not previously thought possible without utilising other land tenure, however, further site investigations have discovered a feasible option. Council is proposing a ‘Class 4’ walking track installation is feasible for this section, which could be upgraded to ‘Class 3’ in the future depending on use and popularity. Other proposed walking tracks to be ‘Class 3’. (Track classes as per AS2156 Walking Track Infrastructure Design.)
Outcome
To incorporate the overall community response, the project has been split up into stages to represent the priority for completion. This means that lower priority stages will be dependent on remaining available funds or future funding.
Stage 1 – Walking Tracks surrounding Mills Park
- Chelmsford Rd (south) to Mills Park (southeast quarter) – Track ‘Class 3’ – Works are scheduled for commencement in November 2022, weather pending.
- Chelmsford Rd to Mills Park track junction to Stokes Avenue – Track ‘Class 4’
- ‘Class 4’ is due to more challenging terrain features. There is currently a negotiable pass down the rocky escarpment where step irons would be installed and a rock hop over the creek line area.
- Mills Park (northeast quarter) to Stratford Cl (tennis court carpark) – Class 3 Track
- This connection would comprise of stair sets to negotiate the long steep rocky slope
Stage 2 – Walking Track Link Stokes Avenue to Michigan Avenue
Stage 3 – Walking Track Link Queens Road to Chelmsford Road (north)
Stage 1 works Chelmsford Rd (south) to Mills Park (southeast quarter) is scheduled for commencement in November 2022 and remaining upgrades are anticipated for completion by July 2023, weather pending.
