Ongoing monitoring at Foxglove Oval to ensure community safety
Hornsby Shire Council has found landfill gas in below-ground monitoring wells around Mount Colah’s Foxglove Oval, a former landfill site that has been closed for nearly 40 years.
The levels of gas are above the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) guidance values and Council is conducting further investigations, including testing inside nearby residences.
“We believe the risk of landfill gas entering those properties is low, but we are adopting a precautionary approach to make absolutely certain of this,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock.
“Based on the monitoring data we have, Foxglove Oval is safe for users, and regular sporting activities can continue as normal.”
Council has engaged environmental specialists GHD to conduct further monitoring around Foxglove Oval and neighbouring properties, while consulting closely with the EPA.
“Once these investigations have been carried out, Council will undertake any remedial action required.” Mayor Ruddock said.
Local residents have been informed of the situation. Council will also be holding community information pop-ups at Foxglove Oval, along with EPA representatives to assist with any community enquiries.
The pop-ups will occur on Monday 15 April, 2.30pm-6.30pm, and Monday 29 April, 2.30pm-6.30pm.
