Support for the bush fire effort
Hornsby Shire Council has joined the wave of people and organisations donating money to support those affected by the ongoing bush fire emergency.
Council will donate $10,000 to the Australian Red Cross, alongside the support it already provides to the local Rural Fire Service.
“Disasters such as this always have a silver lining, revealing the compassionate generosity that is fundamental to human society,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock said.
“Each of the councillors were eager to give what we can and did not hesitate to agree.”
The bush fires have not directly impacted Hornsby Shire this season, but they have come dangerously close to both the northern and southern boundaries.
“We have been lucky so far, but here in the Bushland Shire we know we cannot take that for granted,” Mayor Ruddock said.
“One day we will likely need the support of our neighbours, which is just one of the many reasons we are eager to do everything we can to help those in need.”
Council’s staff have also added their support, hosting a series of casual clothes days throughout the rest of January to raise money for the bush fire appeal.
Staff are also signing up for the Local Government bush fire Recovery Support Group, which will see them go to areas of need to help the council team there.
