Hornsby Shire Council urges residents to take the Plastic Free July challenge

Plastic Free July is recognised globally as an annual month of action where individuals, businesses and governments come together to reduce plastic waste, creating a social change movement. By sharing ideas, positive actions and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps people and organisations ‘choose to refuse’ single-use plastic every day.

The movement has inspired over 100 million people worldwide, and over the last five years, participants have collectively avoided 10 billion kilograms of waste. More importantly, 87% of participants make changes that become habits.

As part of our ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect our environment, Council is presenting three Plastic Free July events to inspire and educate the community:

• Building Plastic Free Habits on Wednesday 10 July, 10.30am-12.30pm
• Keeping Our Shire Beautiful on Monday 15 July, 10.30am-3.00pm
• Beeswax Wrap Making Workshop on Saturday 20 July, 10.30am-12.30pm

The community can also meet the Hornsby Shire Council waste team on 29 June, 8.30am-1pm in Hornsby Mall where they will be available to discuss plastic free alternatives.

“Our excessive consumption of plastic applies pressure to our incredible bushland and waterways,” says Hornsby Shire Mayor the Hon Philip Ruddock AO.

“Plastic Free July is a wonderful way to challenge daily decisions about consumption of plastic and work on reducing plastic waste in our daily lives, both at home and at work. I encourage everyone to get on board to help provide a better future for the generations to come”.
